3 Tips for Keeping Your Kids Active During the Summer
The summer months allow your children to enjoy the warm weather and explore the world around them. To avoid having your kids inside everyday and camping out in front of the television or video game console, child care experts suggest creating a schedule that will encourage them to be active and have fun.
Keep it interesting.
Give children the opportunity to experience a mixture of activities. Let them spend some time engaging in their favorite pastimes, but introduce new hobbies and interests as well. Mix up the day between swimming lessons and craft-time, or soccer practice and baking dates. By spicing up your child’s daily schedule, they’ll be more likely to stay active and perhaps discover a new favorite pastime.
Keep it easy.
Childcare experts also recommend that parents don’t overwhelm their children with too many activities or those that may be beyond their capabilities. While keeping your children busy and engaged is encouraged, they may become frustrated if not allowed time to relax or if challenged by activities they cannot fully grasp. Be mindful of your child’s limitations. If pushed too far, they may refuse to engage in any activity at all.
Keep it safe.
No matter what pastime your children enjoy, their safety should never be compromised. Always monitor their activities, or make sure that another responsible adult is watching them. Also, continually assess their well-being if they participate in outdoor sports. Keep them cool and hydrated. Lastly, discuss with your child what they are or are not allowed to do. If baking together, inform them of what appliances they can use. If swimming, clearly indicate how far or deep they may go in the pool. Though your children may want to do more or go farther, only you can accurately assess their abilities.
