Understanding How Play Affects Your Child's Development

    Last updated 3 months ago

When you invest in your child’s preschool education, you make sure to choose a daycare that teaches the ABC’s. But did you know that playtime is also an essential part of your child’s development? As you explore your childcare options, here are three ways a daycare that incorporates imaginative and physical play into the academic curriculum can equip your child for kindergarten:

    Hones Motor Skills

Does your child’s preschool incorporate outside play as part of a typical day? Physical play helps children develop important motor skills, and experts have even observed a direct correlation between a preschooler’s gross motor skill development and his or her long-term health. This means that even during the winter months, physical activity like running, biking, climbing, or throwing a ball around should be a part of your child’s curriculum.

    Activates Imaginations

Creative play opportunities are critical for healthy childhood development. Make sure your child’s school incorporates classroom elements like costume corners, hands-on science experiments, kitchen sets, and tactile art activities like finger painting and ceramics. Imaginative play is more than just a simple game of pretend, it actually improves the emotional and behavioral skills that are good predictors of academic performance later in life.

    Encourages Collaboration

Group activities allow pairs or small groups of children to work together on a project, teaching them important lessons in peer interaction, cooperation, and problem-solving. If your preschooler is an only child, exercises like circle time, games with rules, and making music are especially important for developing social skills. Although all children need some structure, the best preschool programs include time each day for free play and exploring.

If you are a parent, reading aloud can be a wonderful opportunity to engage with your children and help them learn new concepts. Watch this video to make sure your kids get the most out of this bonding experience.

First, always remember to convey as much energy as you can—your enthusiasm will encourage your kids to engage with the story. Next, try to make time to read the book beforehand so you are familiar with the text and can take time to answer questions. Finally, remember to have fun! If you’re enjoying the experience, your audience will, too.

Fun and Educational Science Experiments to Share with Your Child

    Last updated 4 months ago

Nearly all parents want their children to succeed in school, regardless of how well we may have done ourselves. A great way to ensure lifelong success is to get involved with your child’s educational activities. This article will take a closer look at some fun and educational science experiments you can complete with your child.

    Dancing Raisins

Even if your child is not a fan of the California Raisins, they will still enjoy seeing this tasty snack dance in front of their eyes. Start by pouring a can of colorless soda into a tall glass and dropping six or seven raisins into the glass. Watch the raisins together for several minutes as they initially sink to the bottom of the glass before floating to the surface due to the change in carbon dioxide bubbles.

    Sinking and Floating Soda Cans

The next time you’re at a picnic or one of your children’s softball games, consider trying out the Soda Can experiment. Fill a sink or cooler with water and insert a few cans of both regular and diet soda. The regular soda contains high amounts of sugar and therefore has a higher density, meaning that they are more likely to sink to the bottom while the diet-soda cans float to the surface.

    Layering Liquids

Mixing different liquids together is a great way to experiment with different densities in the comfort of your own kitchen. Fill a glass with ¼-cup water and ¼-cup vegetable oil and let your child watch as the densities of each substance keep the water and oil from mixing. It’s a simple and clear way to give your child an unforgettable scientific lesson.

Here at A Child's World, we believe that the learning process should be a fun, exciting experience regardless of the topic. Give us a call at (888) 861-7857 to learn more about our Newtown daycare programs.
